Do not tighten completely yet. This is where your helper will come in real handy. Once the doors are all in place, go through and tighten all the screws. The doors that used to line up exactly were now overlapping. What happened?! I was able to fix this by moving one of the doors over slightly. I simply filled the original holes, and drilled new pilot holes in the right place.
If that was the easy way, what does the not-so-easy way look like? Sign up for the newsletter , and be the first to know when that post is published! Creating a color-filled life. Conquering my little world one DIY project at a time.
Close the door and adjust the tension. If your spring hinges feature a hex opening on top of the barrel, insert an Allen wrench and turn it clockwise to increase tension. Insert a locking pin, which comes with the spring hinges, into the first hole that is revealed when you turn the Allen wrench. Remove the Allen wrench and test the door.
If it closes and latches automatically, your project is complete. If not, reinsert the Allen wrench and move the locking pin to the second hole. Repeat this step as necessary. Adjust spring hinges that do not feature a hex opening by using a tension lever, which should come with the hinges. With the door closed, insert the tension lever in the far right hole on the top of the hinge.
Pull the lever to the left to expose the first locking hole, then insert a locking pin into the hole. Remove the tension lever and test the door. Loosen and remove the retainer screw and cap with a screwdriver.
Save the cap and screw. Turn the slotted adjuster inside counterclockwise with the screwdriver until the hinge butts close face to face easily by hand. Set up a power or cordless drill with a screw-tip attachment. Position the gate on edge with the edge where the hinges install facing up. Open a hinge so the butts are parallel instead of at an angle to each other. Position the hinge at the end of the wooden rail that attaches across the back of the gate, with the top of the barrel facing the top of the gate.
Position the innermost butt at the end of the wooden rail. Attach the butt to the end of the rail with the provided wood screws at each of the machined holes. Repeat Steps 2 through 4 and attach the remaining hinge at the end of the opposite rail, with the top of the barrel facing the top of the gate. Stand the gate in the open position with the hinges facing the appropriate gate post. Place two two-by-fours flat on the ground under the bottom of the gate as temporary supports while you attach the hinges to the gate post.
Space the blocks 24 inches apart. Align the sides of the hinge barrels against the outer edge of the gate post.
