In our study Mirpur road was modeled and simulated. Firstly the existing condition was modeled in CORSIM then analyses are done; traffic flows and speeds are collected from different intersections and matched with field values. By comparing the field values with the values obtained from the software calibration and validation is done.
It was found that the traffic congestions were huge at every intersection within the study area. First optimum signal timing was tested and later further improvements were achieved with the help of visualization of the simulation. Satisfactory results were obtained as the average speed of the vehicles increased and delay time decreased for every link as well as for the whole network. It will not be possible to eliminate the congestion by improving the signal design alone, but the traffic operating condition of our existing roads can be improved by setting appropriate signal timing at the intersections along the roads.
In future existing condition might be improved by the restriction of turning movements, one way operation, junction clear way, speed and parking control, coordinated signal control, variable message signs, navigation systems and automated highway systems by using simulation software.
